A strong storm system, separating bitterly cold and snow conditions in the Midwest from warm air with thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic, is set to impact our area with several types of hazardous weather.
Strong winds will develop Wednesday with gusts to 35 mph for most locations, however up to 70 mph at the mountain peaks! In fact Mount Mansfield has already gusted to 71 mph Wednesday morning. Winds will get even stronger Wednesday night to Thursday morning, with widespread gusts potentially to 50 mph in the lower elevations and up to 65 mph across much of northern New York. The mountain peaks will have wind gusts to possibly 80 mph Wednesday night.
Power outages will be likely both Wednesday and Thursday. So far Wednesday morning Washington county in Vermont has ranged from 3,000 to 4,000 outages, while the rest of Vermont has shown far less on www.vtoutages.com .
Heavy rain is likely Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Most towns will get one inch of rain. However some locations may get up to 1.5." Combined with melting snow from warm temperatures, flooding will be a much higher threat. There may be street flooding from poor drainage areas, plus river flooding from ice jams. The flooding threat will last through Friday morning.
It will get very cold once again after this storm. Temperatures will be in the 50s Wednesday, 40s-30s Thursday, then 10s Friday. Scattered snow showers will be possible through the weekend, however a slow recovery to add snow pack after much of it will be lost during these couple of very warm days.
