LITTLETON, N.H. -

Prosecutors say they believe a woman was randomly stabbed in the lobby of the Hampton Inn in Littleton and later died.

They say 37-year-old Rodney Hill, of West Danville, Vt., was arrested and charged with two counts of 2nd degree murder in the death of 70-year-old Dr. Catherine "Kitty" Houghton.

Hill is accused of stabbing her in the neck and torso.  He's being held without bail.

Police say they responded to a 911 call at approximately 8:50 p.m. When they arrived, they saw Hill and took him into custody.

Prosecutors say Hill and Houghton had been guests at the hotel.  They would not say how long they had been there or what might have brought them to Littleton.

They also would not comment about a possible motive.

The White Mountain School, located near Littleton, released the following statement on its website:

"The White Mountain School community is deeply saddened by the loss of Catherine "Kitty" Houghton member of the class of 1960 and board of trustees, who died tragically last night. She will long be remembered for her kindness, love of music, keen intellect and adventurous spirit. She lived life to its fullest, pursuing each next step with curiosity and joy. Through her words, actions and deeds she has inspired countless others to do the same." Full statement here.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
