BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and the Director of Parks and Recreation Jesse Bridges took a freezing plunge into the lake Monday.

It was in anticipation of the 18th annual Vermont penguin plunge which aims to raise $400,000 for Vermont Special Olympics.

It is expected to bring out 1,200 people who will all jump in the frigid waters for the cause.

The Parks and Recreation Department says it's a great way to involve the community.

"This is exactly the type of collaborative event that Burlington Parks and Rec is striving for,"  Bridges said. "This is exactly the type of community focused event that we want to see down here at Waterfront Park. This is a great opportunity."

The penguin plunge happens this Saturday, February 2nd, but it's not too late to sign up.
