Customers Could Save Money Using Debit Instead of Credit

Posted: Updated:

The next time you head to the register at check out, you could be saving money using debit instead of credit.

Some stores, in most states, now charge you a fee for credit.

This is all part of a settlement between Visa, MasterCard, and 9 other banks.

That settlement allows merchants to pass on fees the credit issuers make them pay. This is then passed down to you.

You could be charged anywhere between 1.5 to 3% on your purchase if you choose to charge it.

MasterCard officials say it doesn't expect merchants to add the surcharge because it would drive away business.
