COLCHESTER, Vt. -
The Colchester Fire Department and Police Department, along with the help from other towns, responded a fire broke out in a guest room on the third floor at Motel 6 early Wednesday morning.
Police say just after midnight they found a 44-year-old man from Winooski, Vt. still inside the room.
He was transported to Fletcher Allen with burns on his upper body and face. His condition is listed as serious.
Police say revealed he was smoking in bed while connected to a home oxygen supply tank. The tank then ignited.
The sprinkler system helped contain the fire.
The hotel received massive water damage from the sprinkler system. Many of the guests that have been staying at the motel have been relocated.
