Layers Key to Clothes for Cold Weather

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

If you have to head out in this cold, we're always told to "bundle up" but what should you be wearing and what should it be made of?

If you want to know what to wear outside, just stop by the Outdoor Gear Exchange in Burlington.

"I think people are putting more time and research into it," says Dave Russo, a clothing specialist.

Russo says the foundation is the base layer.  He says the days of just cotton long johns are over.

"Once you try wool and you see how much it works better than synthetics in a lot of ways you are just hooked on it," says Russo.

Russo says the base layer helps wick away moisture from your body.  Which means he says it has to be snug.

"You don't want gaps and wind coming up underneath. It's supposed to be tight to move the moisture through the layers of clothing that you have on," says Russo.

Next is the mid-layer which is a layer or even two of insulation.  Options range from fleece to down to wool.  Russo says it's up to you and how cold it is.

Last is the outer layer.  Russo that's only needed to block either wind, rain, or snow.

No matter how many layers you have on and what they're made of, Russo says they all should be breathable and fit well.

"It's just going to allow the moisture to move easier, sort of takes up the gap in space and there's less extra air to warm up," says Russo.

Russo says more expensive clothes, including wool, work better, tend to be less bulky, and last longer than cheaper options.

And don't forget to cover everything else with gloves, hats, and scarves.
