Keeping Your Pets Safe in Extremely Cold Weather

Posted: Updated:

Of course we don't want to forget about keeping our four-legged friends safe in this cold weather.

The staff at Burlington Animal Hospital told FOX44 and ABC22 a few weeks ago that the best way to protect your pets is pretty simple, bring them inside!

If that's not an option, only let them out for 30 minutes or less. When Fido or Sally starts to shiver it's time to go inside!

The ASPCA offers other good advice.

Keep cats inside during the winter. During the winter, cats sometimes seek shelter under the hoods of cars. If you know of outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the hood of your car to give the cat a chance to get to safety.

Never let your dog off the leash. During snowstorms dogs can't smell as well so they could get lost.

Wipe your dog's legs and stomach after going inside. If he licks his paws he could ingest bad chemicals used for de-icing.

And never leave your pets alone in the car.
