Shelters Prepare for Cold Weather

Posted: Updated:
ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

Staff at shelters say word of the cold snap has more people interested in finding a place to stay.

As the temperature drops, the beds fill up at Tim's House in St. Albans, Vermont.  Divan James says she's thankful she and her son Kaegan already have a spot here.

"I would probably be out there in the cold with him freezing," says James.

James says she's heard from people who have done it.

"They tell their stories like it's not that bad but the wind cuts right through you. And it's like man, I couldn't imagine even one night," says James.

That doesn't have to happen.  Tim's House executive director Linda Ryan says there is plenty of room.

"Our shelter holds about 12 to 14 and we can have six more in real cold weather," says Ryan.  "We still have beds upstairs because a few people just left and found housing. So we don't anticipate having a problem. No one would be left out in the cold."

But Ryan says some people just can't be convinced to come inside, even on the coldest nights.

"They double up in tents with their heaters. It's incredible," says Ryan.

Now over the next few days, if a shelter becomes full, call 211 which may allow you to stay free at a hotel.
