Ways To Keep Safe While Warming Your Home

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The next few days will look like this in our area.

Cold temperatures will create below zero conditions.

"It may be a little late for large scale improvement," said Efficiency Vermont home energy expert Logan Brown.

Brown says you don't have to spend a lot of money to keep warm.

It starts with opening the blinds to let the sun in.

You can also use an electric space heater.

Of course there's another way to keep warm.

You can simply dress in layers.

Brown also says make sure your heating vents are clear of snow.

Check the levels in your oil or propane tank and because you're running heating devices, check the batteries in your smoke detector in case there's a fire.

One big thing you don't want to do Brown says is turn on your oven and try to get heat.

"They're just exhausting their combustion gases into the home and you're breathing them, you have no way to get those combustion gases outside of the home and that's just not a safe heating compliance to use," said Brown.

At night, Brown says it's important to not just heat the room that you sleep in, because it can cause pipe issues.

"If you are aware of certain problems that you have with cold snaps, make sure you leave the heat on evenly throughout the house," said Brown.
