Desert Siege Toll Passes 80; Bomb Squads Search

Posted: Updated:
ALGIERS, Algeria -

Algerian bomb squads are still searching a gas refinery today after Algerian special forces ended an Islamic militant siege on Saturday by storming the facility.

The bomb squads began their work yesterday, searching for mines and other explosives and also finding more bodies scattered throughout the site. That raised the death toll past 80.

Algerian government officials say the terrorists intended to use the explosives to blow up the complex and kill all their captives.

The Masked Brigade, which claims responsibility for the attack, warns of more such attacks on countries aiding French military operations in Mali.
