Burlington Police: Thieves Target Apple Products

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Walk along Church Street in Burlington Friday, and you can't miss them.

iPhones used to make calls.

iPads to keep people up-to-date in coffee shops.

Devices that Burlington police say are in demand.

"Apple products are a hot commodity," said Corporal Dominic Brodeur.

A nice market, not just for users, but thieves.

Brodeur says in 2012, an Apple product was stolen nearly every single day in the city.

"It's easy to offload and the market is just right for them," said Brodeur.

In 2012 Brodeur says 336 devices were taken.

"I think is astounding," said Brodeur.

Mainly from people leaving them out in cars.

And he says it's not happening in one location, or thieves targeting a specific product.

"iPods, iPads, iPhones and laptops," said Brodeur.

They all have high re-sale value.

Take the iPhone 5, for example, many buyback programs, or online buyers, pay you more than $100 dollars.

There are ways to keep your device safe.

You can put a lock in place that requires a 4-digit pin to use the device so criminals can't go turn off your GPS.

And there are applications that uses the devices GPS tracking technology to help law enforcement track down where your product.

Brodeur says police have used those types of applications to help track down some of the thefts.

But he says the majority of devices aren't found and criminals have found an easy way to cash-in.
