Overall Death Rate For Cancer in US Drops in the Past Two Decades

Posted: Updated:

The overall death rate for cancer in the U.S. has dropped by nearly a fifth over the past two decades.

The report is compiled by the American Cancer Society.

Cancer death rates fell by 24% for men and 16% for women between 1991 and 2009.

The decline translates into more than a million lives saved over the past two decades.

Death rates have fallen for colon, breast and prostate cancers thanks to improvements in early detection and treatment.

An American Cancer Society spokesperson says more progress could be made if the latest advancements in cancer prevention and treatment were extended to all racial and economic groups.
