WASHINGTON -

Now that President Barack Obama has unveiled an administration plan to reduce gun violence, those for and against are making themselves heard.

After outlining his proposals, President Obama signed executive actions aimed at strengthening some gun laws.

The plan to mandate background checks for everyone buying a gun requires Congressional action.

Congressional action is also needed for reinstating the ban on military style assault weapons, armor piercing bullets and new gun trafficking laws.

"There is a need for an assault weapons ban," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter (D) said.

"This announcement by the president was really less about protecting our children that it was about using our children to promote an anti-gun agenda," David Keene, President of the NRA said.

Updated legislation on assault weapons ban will be introduced in the Senate next week.

The first hearings of the president's proposals are scheduled for the end of the month.
