Border Patrol Agents Stop Smuggling Attempt of Aggravated Felon

SWANTON, Vt. -

Border Patrol agents stopped the smuggling attempt of an aggravated felon Wednesday.

A press release says around 1:30 a.m., agents from the Champlain Border Patrol station stopped a suspicious black SUV with four people inside driving east on Route 276 near Rouses Point, N.Y.

The driver and one of the passengers were nationals from El Salvador residing in the United States as lawful permanent residents. Another passenger  from El Salvador was living in the United States illegally.

Agents say one of the passengers was a national from the Dominican Republic and an aggravated felon previously removed from the United States.

The three El Salvador nationals were charged with Alien Smuggling while the national from the Dominican Republic was charged with Re-Entry after Deportation.  

A conviction for Alien Smuggling can result in up to 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
