Some Hostages in Algeria Escape

Posted: Updated:
ALEGERIA -

It's believed 40 people including some Americans have actually escaped from where they were being held hostage in Algeria by rebels linked to Al Qaeda.

The U.S. called the kidnapping an act of terrorism.

The attack appeared to be revenge for the French and U.S. intervention in neighboring Mali.

Algeria's government confirmed a gas field, partially owned by BP, was attacked by terrorists Wednesday.

Officials say two foreigners died in the attack and at least 40 people were taken hostage.

About half of the hostages have escaped from the terrorists, including some Americans who were able to phone their families.
