Reducing Crime in Burlington

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington police say they want to find new ways so that people in the city can help cut crime.

The chief says the department is in favor of more community involvement and held a meeting with the public Tuesday.

He says there hasn't been a neighborhood watch program in the city for 15 years.

While the chief says that might not be the best option now, he is challenging people to find other ways to help protect their neighborhood.

"If the word on the street is that the neighborhood has a low tolerance for crime, for disorder, for shenanigans, as I said, if there is a high likelihood that someone is going to call something in, it drives down the level of crime and disorder in that neighborhood," says Chief Michael Schirling, Burlington Police Department.

Suggestions included everything from refrigerator magnets with key emergency phone numbers to better street lighting.
