Shots Fired at Two Cars Driving North on I-89 - Police Need Your Help

Posted: Updated:
GEORGIA, Vt. -

Drivers heading north on I-89 last night had bullets flying through their windows. Police say the shooter of at least two drive-by shootings is still out there, and they need your help to catch who is involved.

Fortunately no one was hurt, but you can no doubt bet the drivers were shook up when bullets were fired at their cars. Because this could have been deadly, police say they're actively investigating this case.

At least two drivers, a 48 year old woman and a 32 man, both from Vermont were driving north on I-89 near Georgia when bullets came flying and broke their car windows late Sunday afternoon.

"We believe it was someone who was armed with a BB or a pellet gun," Lieutenant John Flannigan said, of the Vermont State Police St. Albans Barracks.

Police believe shots were fired from a wooded area near the side of the interstate, on Bovat Road, not far from the Georgia Rest Area. Shockingly the drivers didn't crash after the bullets shattered the glass.

"It did cause damage to two vehicles and potentially could have caused injuries to one of the occupants of one of those vehicles," Lt. Flannigan said.

Police are still trying to determine if the two cars hit were targeted or struck at random.

"At this point I don't know what their intent or motive was," Lt. Flannigan said.

It was about five on Sunday night when a Vermont State Police Trooper stopped by the Georgia Rest Area to see if anyone had seen or heard anything suspicious.

The woman working, Johanne Labounty told me, "he said he had a couple reports of car windows being shot at by a driver shooter about one and a half miles from this rest area."

There are video cameras at the rest area, but they didn't capture the shooter, and the drivers didn't get a description, so police are relying on your help.

"That little piece of information could be crucial for us to solving this crime," Lt. Flannigan said.

Again police say the weapon used was either a BB gun or a low caliber firearm.
