SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Some of the busiest places you go during your day might also be one of the easiest places to catch the flu.
You can find solitude at the library but also a lot of sharing.
"We average a transaction every 30 seconds," South Burlington Community Library Director Louise Murphy said.
And during flu season that can spread more than knowledge.
"The flu is a concern in all public places but particularly in libraries," Murphy said.
To fight the flu the library has hand sanitizers throughout the facility and toys kids play with during story time are even washed afterward.
Grownups share toys that need cleaning too at the Edge Sports and Fitness.
"We use a disinfectant that's created for certain things like killing the flu," Edge owner Mike Feitelberg said.
Edge also has hand sanitizers and cleaning crews to keep the gym from being a sick zone.
"We're in the business of trying to keep people healthy and anything we can try to do to that extent we're going to do." Feitelberg said.
The library and the gym didn't wait until now to start battling the flu epidemic. Instead the first chapter of this story was written back in 2012.
"Every fall the city of South Burlington has a day when everybody can go and schedule a flu shot," Murphy said.
Which many local librarians and other city employees took advantage of.
They had a similar day at several Edge locations across town where the Visiting Nurse Association came and administered flu shots.
"A lot of people both staff and members got vaccinated and again I think the general awareness factor really went up for people so I think they were exposed to a lot of good information," Feitelberg said.
