COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Green Mountain Power has awarded a tree-trimming contract to Pennsylvania-based company Asplundh.

According to Dotty Schnure, spokesperson for GMP, this contract will save ratepayers $500,000 dollars each year.  Asplundh will take care of 50% of overall trimming needs and 60% of distribution trimming needs.

Schnure says despite the company being from out-of-state, they will still use the same amount of local workers.

During the bidding process, GMP looked at was cost effectiveness and safety performance.

The extra money Schnure says will go to a savings plan that was promised when the two companies merged.

Before GMP & CVPS merged, GMP used one national tree-trimming company and CVPS used several different companies, including national and local.  The contract is for three years and has yet to be signed.
