Officer Recovering After Subduing Vt. Prisoner

RUTLAND, Vt. -

A Rutland County Sheriff's deputy is recovering from injuries suffered while subduing a prisoner attempting to escape.

Sheriff Stephen Bernard says Lt. Frank Wilk will be out of work for several weeks after suffering badly bruised ribs.

The Rutland Herald reports Wilk had just arrived at the Rutland jail Monday with four prisoners in a transport van when one of them kicked out a window and tried to run for it.

Wilk caught up with 21-year-old Kelley Staples Jr., whose hands and feet were shackled. Bernard said Staples may have slipped one of his hands out of the restraints before he escaped.

Staples was arrested on 10 outstanding warrant for charges ranging from arson to possession of stolen items.
