Boston Declares Public Health Emergency Over Flu

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON -

FOX44 and ABC22 have been reporting on the flu spreading throughout the U.S. at a much faster pace this year. Because of this, Boston has declared a public health emergency.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says there have been 700 confirmed flu cases in Boston this year.

That's up from 70 for all of last season.

Health officials are urging people to take precautions.

"First of all get vaccinated. It's not too late to get  vaccinated. But even before and just as important as being vaccinated is washing your hands regularly. You  know flu is transmitted from person to person, so good hand hygiene as we  learned during the H1N1 pandemic is the first line of defense against the flu," Kevin Cranston, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, said.

There have been 18 flu-related deaths reported in Massachusetts.
