Top Legislative Leaders: NY Gun Deal Nearly Done

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, N.Y. -

Two top legislative leaders say a deal is nearly completed to ban assault rifles and to crack down on illegal gun trafficking.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says the deal is almost done to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips. Those measures will also be high priorities in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's State of the State speech Wednesday.

Republican Sen. Martin Golden of Brooklyn says in an interview that he agrees the deal is 95 percent done. He says it will include some tougher penalties for gun crimes and a crackdown on illegal guns which are the major source of firearms used for crimes in New York City.

New York could be the first state to enact tougher gun laws following the December mass shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

FOX44 and ABC22 will be live-streaming Cuomo's address at 1:30 p.m.
