COLCHESTER, Vt. -

We have a warning about a phone scam that's targeting small business owners.

Green Mountain Power says a number of its customers have received calls from someone claiming to be them looking for financial information.

The electric company says at least a half dozen Rutland area businesses have received a call.

GMP officials say if there ever was a financial problem they would not ask that for that info over the phone.

"We would not call our customers and ask for their credit card information, never. Any customer who might be having a problem paying their bill, we would work with them one on one," said GMP spokesperson Robert Dostis.

This is similar to other phone scams we've been warning you about.

So remember, if you receive a call, do not give out any information and follow these two simple steps.

Hang up and call your local police department.
