WASHINGTON -
President Obama plans to name former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as his nominee to become the next defense secretary Monday.
According to Administration Officials, he president telephoned Hagel Sunday.
Hagel will have to overcome vocal opposition from pro-Israel groups who object to his stance on Iran and Hamas.
Also some veterans now serving in Congress are still fuming over Hagel's views on the troop surge in Iraq.
Hagel has served as the Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration during the Regan Administration as well as the head of the USO.
Hagel was also the co-author of the 9/11 GI Bill.
