Rutland, Vt. Agrees to Not Ban Marijuana Dispensaries

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND, Vt. -

The select board in Rutland has decided to not prohibit a medical marijuana dispensary from locating in town.

There hasn't been a specific request to open a dispensary in Rutland, but board members are in consensus that no action should be taken to ban them outright.

Vermont passed a law in 2011 that authorizes up to four privately run dispensaries to provide marijuana for patients with chronic illness or intractable pain. The state has licensed dispensaries in Burlington and Waterbury.

Board member Paul Faignant told the Rutland Herald that marijuana has some medical value and that to outright ban a dispensary would be hypocritical.
