75-Watt Light Bulbs Will Be Phased Out Monday Night

WASHINGTON -

Out with the old, in with the new. We're just a day away until 75-watt light bulbs become a thing of yesteryear.

The bulbs will be phased out Monday night.

In their place will be LED bulbs.

The new bulbs may cost more, but officials say they're well worth the price.

LED bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and have a longer shelf life.

"You know, it sounds like a lot of money and it is a lot of money, but the good news is that even a bulb that's that expensive is still going to save you anywhere from one-hundred to one-hundred-and-fifty dollars over its lifetime," Celia Kuperszmid Lehrman, Deputy Home Editor of Consumer Reports, said.

Scientists say they're much better for the environment because they use less electricity.

Next year, it will be lights out for the 60 and 40-watt bulbs.
