Shopping Fueled By Snow

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Close to two feet of snow fell on Burlington in the last week but that's not slowing business down for some downtown shops.

"A lot of people coming in and getting what they want and it's been pretty busy," Dear Lucy employee Anna Speidel said. Dear Lucy sells women's boots and handbags.

In fact the snow is driving even more customers to some stores like Stella Mae, a women's clothing store, and Dear Lucy.

"The snow storm has really helped us out with winter boot sales. Last year it wasn't so hot," Stella Mae manager Alison Quigley said.

"A lot of people are coming in for winter boots right now," Speidel said.

The winter storm sales are financed by a lot of gift cards and Christmas money. Retailers say they aren't seeing as many returns as exchanges.

"I'm coming in to exchange a pair of boots. Awesome Frye boots I got for Christmas that aren't just the quite size," Stella Mae customer Hiata Defeo said.

"Now it's pretty busy doing Christmas returns. Shoes are sort of hard to fit for Christmas for somebody else," Speidel said.

It's not just boots but all winter weather apparel and at the Catamount store they can tell the weather's changed by what they're selling..

"We definitely see a pick up on heavier sweatshirts, scarves, mittens and hats," Kelly Darling said.

Although the winter weather initially kept some people inside retailers say now that shoppers are returning to the stores.

"At first it slowed down but I think once people realize the snow's just part of the scenery they come out and relax and enjoy shopping in the snow," Darling said.
