Cross-County Skiers Rejoice As Snow Hits Vermont

WILLISTON, Vt. -

When Mike Lurie and his wife came to visit family in Vermont this week they couldn't wait to snap in.

"I was hoping for this. When I heard they'd get a foot of snow, I was hoping for 2 feet of snow," said Lurie.

It wasn't exactly two but 15 inches fell on the Catamount Outdoor Family Center in Williston.

That meant for the first time this season people could snowshoe or cross-country ski.

"Lots of snow, it's great, can't wait to get skiing!" said Lurie.

The fresh powder also excited Mika Holtz who didn't mind the risk of falling down.

"It snowed a bunch [Thursday] and it would be a shame if I didn't go outside and do something in it," said Holtz.

While many ski resorts across the state have the ability to make their own snow, well places like this, they depend on the stuff from above.

"We desperately needed it," said Catamount Outdoor Family Center Executive Director Eric Bowker.

Bowker says last season they were open barely more than a week.

"We were about to go over our own fiscal cliff here in a couple weeks if we didn't get snow honestly," said Bowker.

But with colder temperatures in store for days to come this season could make up a lot of ground which means more work for Bowker.

"As of [Thursday] and [Friday] I've got about a hundred miles on the snow machine," said Bowker.

Although Bowker says he's not complaining.

If you're looking for something new to try out, Catamount is offering rides on snow bikes that you can take on its trails.
