Winter Driving Safety

Posted: Updated:
WILLISTON, Vt. -

Police say the best advice for drivers is to stay home Thursday if possible.

They say for those who just have to head out make sure you do so safely.

"Anytime that we are out in weather conditions, things can deteriorate very rapidly," says Lt. John Flannigan, Vermont State Police.

Flannigan says the number one rule for driving on snowy roads is to go slow.  Also, he says leave more room when following other cars.

"It may be practical to be 5 or 6 seconds behind a vehicle so that you have enough time to react," says Flannigan.

Flannigan also suggests good windshield wipers to keep a clear view and winter tires to provide more traction.

If you do go off the road don't leave your car running, unless you've checked to make sure your exhaust is clear.  If your exhaust is buried in deep snow, it could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police say they expect to be busy Thursday with slide offs and crashes.

"We do certainly in Vermont see a higher number of crashes in the winter months," says Flannigan.

This has been an especially deadly year on Vermont roads with 75 people having died.  That's why a winter storm has police even more concerned.

"Our responsibility is to drive as safe as possible," says Flannigan.

To prepare for an emergency, Flannigan says you should pack your car with things including a first aid kit, blanket, road flare, ice scraper, and shovel.

"Most of us take driving for granted," says Flannigan.

Police say carry a cell phone and call 911 in an emergency.  But don't rely on it too much because we all know there are lots of spots in our area they don't work.
