NEWBURY, Vt. -

Vermont State Police troopers and crime scene investigators worked outside a small, one room, apartment in Newbury Wednesday.

In it they say Anne-Marie Whiteway, 51 of Bradford shot and killed Dale Rock, 43.

Investigators made it to the home shortly after the shooting and found him in the apartment.

Although Whiteway was nowhere to be found because police say she took off in a Subaru.

"When they did make it to the residence they did find Mr. Rock deceased from an apparent gunshot wound," said Vermont State Police Major Ed Ledo.

Police later learned from the autopsy that rock died from that gunshot to the head.

Less than ten hours after the shooting, police arrested Whiteway and charged her with second-degree murder.

During the shooting they say Whiteway was with two other people, but they don't believe any they were involved.

"We're confident in the witness statements and what the detectives have gathered so far that Ms. Whiteway acted alone," said Ledo.

Because the Orange County state's attorney was away, Whiteway wasn't in court Wednesday.

And although police are confident they have their suspect, they won't say what might have lead to a Christmas Day killing.

"I know you're chomping at the bit and I know you want more. I wish I could give you more. I can't right now," said Ledo.

Whiteway is being held at a correctional facility in Springfield Wednesday night.

She's scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, where she will face that second degree murder charge.
