BURLINGTON, Vt. -
This can be a tricky time for people trying to watch their weight.
That's why the Vermont Health Department has advice for during the holiday's.
First they remind people that drinks with alcohol can pack a lot of calories. That's one of the reasons the health department says to drink in moderation if at all.
Also while there is lots of yummy food, it also means lots of calories.
"So consider stocking up on vegetables and fruits when you go to dinner. Fill your plates with that first and you're less likely to take some of the heavier food," says Tracy Dolan, Vermont Deputy Commissioner for Health.
Also to avoid the holiday pounds, the health department suggests adding new traditions, including going for a walk or sledding in the afternoon.
Not only will it burn calories but it will get you away from tempting food for awhile.
