STOWE, Vt. -

At Vermont ski resorts, you can already sense the anticipation for Thursday's storm.

Many hope it is a hint of what will be a strong winter season.

At Stowe Mountain Resort Tuesday, The Leifer Family from the New York City area chose a new destination this year for their Christmas ski trip.

"My son, the ski racer, said 'Let's go up to Vermont' and we got a room for a couple nights," says Amy Leifer.

Leifer says they had heard there was a lot of snow and now forecasters predict up to two feet of snow could fall on Vermont resorts Thursday.

"The stars are aligning for sure with the weather. We were able to get our earliest opening in history," says Mike Colbourn, Stowe Ski Resort director of marketing.

Colbourn says a recent big investment in snow making has helped a lot.

At Stowe, 84-percent of trails are open and the average across all Vermont resorts is 60-percent.

While Thursday's storm should really help conditions at resorts, including here at Stowe, that are already open, it could really be a big benefit to those places that have yet to open.

Ski Vermont reports three downhill ski resorts plan to open or reopen Wednesday and there are a dozen Nordic centers just waiting to open.

That's why many say the timing of this storm will help a lot.

"This is a critical holiday week for us because it brings so many people into the area," says Colbourn.

People including the Leifer family.

"Definitely we will be back again. We had a great experience up here," says Leifer.
