Heavy Winds Cause Outages Across Vermont

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Thousands of people across Vermont are without power due to heavy winds.

As of 11:30 a.m. vtoutages.com is reporting over 17,000 outages. The bulk of outages are in Rutland, Chittenden, Bennington, Addison and Essex counties.

The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a high-wind warning until 7 p.m. for parts of Vermont, including the western slopes and higher terrain of the Green Mountains, including Rutland, Underhill, Ripton, Nashville and Cambridge.

Wind gusts could reach up to 80 mph. NWS said a wind gust of 125 mph was recorded on the top of Mount Mansfield.

The state's largest utility, Green Mountain Power, began preparing for outages earlier this week, bringing in nearly 40 contract line workers and tree crews.

"This storm has potential to cause widespread outages" said GMP spokesman Jeremy Baker.  "We have made extensive preparations, and we're ready to respond if damage begins to unfold."
