Moretown Landfill Faces Possible Closure

Posted: Updated:
MORETOWN, Vt. -

The Moretown Landfill is facing possible closure, as early as March. On Thursday, the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources sent a notice to deny its renewal application to the regional landfill manager—citing ongoing odor problems.

State officials warned the landfill earlier this month of a possible closure due to their inability to comply with state solid waste regulations.

Right now the landfill is operating on an expired license and is full, according to Deb Markowitz, secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.

The ANR has now opened up a 30-day public comment period, which will end on January 21. Comments should be sent to Ben Gauthier at Benjamin.Gauthier@state.vt.us.

The agency will make its final decision on March 8, 2013.

Closing this landfill would leave Vermont with one certified landfill, which is operated by Casella Waste Systems. That landfill is in Coventry.

Fox44 will have much more on this story Friday at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. & 11 p.m. on ABC22. And at 10 p.m. on Fox44.
