Leahy Will Not Take Over as Chairman of Senate Appropriations Committee

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Patrick Leahy says he will not take over as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The spot opened up this week with the death of Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye.

Leahy says he will remain as judiciary committee chair.

He says staying in that position while maintaining his seniority on appropriations will allow him to protect both the Constitution and Vermont.

Leahy has taken over as President Pro Tem of the Senate, a position that puts him third in line for presidency.
