WILLISTON, Vt. -
Helping customers is something Jay O'Brien is used to doing around the holidays at his gun shop in Williston, Vermont.
But this year it's non-stop.
"It's been incredibly busy," said BJ's Hunting & Shooting Supply Owner Jay O'Brien.
His store, BJ's Hunting and Shooting Supply, is full with people looking to be guns and ammo.
But it's not just for gifts.
O'Brien says it's because of comments like this.
"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," said President Barack Obama.
Since Friday, a number of politicians, including President Obama have hinted at tougher gun control and O'Brien says that has some people worried.
"And people that are trying to purchase something before perhaps our legislatures tell us we can't," said O'Brien.
So what process do people have to go through to buy a gun in Vermont?
It starts with an ID.
Then you have to fill out a form.
In it you not only have to fill out information about yourself, but you must answer questions, including if you're addicted to drugs or been committed to a mental institution.
After that, stores call the FBI for a background check.
And if they're approved they can buy the gun.
But O'Brien says even with an FBI approval, you can't always buy the weapon.
"If we feel that the person is not knowledgeable enough or is just not acting correctly, many times we have not sold to people coming in," said O'Brien.
To buy a gun in New Hampshire, it's pretty much the same process.
You just need a government issued ID.
Things are a little different in New York.
Besides an ID, you must have a gun permit in order to purchase a weapon.
