SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
With this melting snow, it's an added reason the Burlington International Airport is fixing its leaking roof.
When at the Burlington International Airport chances are you never noticed those tubes carrying water run-off from the roof into buckets.
"You know what a home depot bucket looks like or a Lowe's bucket? We had them all over the airport. 67 of them," said Gene Richards, Director of Aviation at the airport.
The roof at the airport was over two decades old and what you're looking at here is brand new roof starting to take shape.
"It's been a roof that's been leaking for years and we haven't had the finances to take care of it. This year we put the financing packet together," said Richards.
The new roof costs 744 thousand dollars, "It's being paid for by PFC's, which are money that we get from the airline as people come in and out so we use that money for investing into the airport," said Richards.
Approving the roof has been a lengthy process, "It has to be approved by the airport commission then go to the finance board and then it goes to the city council and they just approve all expenditures over 100 thousand dollars for the airport," said Richards.
And Monday night the Burlington City Council approved the resolution. Now, as the freshly fallen snow begins to melt, the airport is excited that each new section of roofing means, "Finally today, we are about halfway done and we are getting rid of buckets every day," said Richards.
The new roof will last for the next 20 years and the project is expected to be completed in January.
