SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Parents and students will notice extra security at South Burlington schools this week.
That's because the district says a staff member came forward with a potential concern.
On Monday morning Superintendent David Young says the staff was having a talk about the Sandy Hook tragedy and safety. Young praised an employee for being honest and coming forward with her or his concern.
"It was a non-school, non-specific piece of information that really when we listened to the information that again was provided to us by a staff member," says Young.
That prompted all doors at all public South Burlington schools to be locked. Normally only the front door is left unlocked. A staff member was stationed at the door to let people inside.
Students and parents say they were confused about what prompted the changes.
"Just seemed like a rumor. No one actually knew what was going on," says Chloe Rogers, a junior.
Parents says they received an email from the school district. It said there was a potential concern, all the school doors would be locked, and only a staff person would let people in.
"My number one concern was well are we all safe here," says Catherine Blanchard, parent of 6th grader.
The superintendent says he was vague about the concern to allow police to investigate.
South Burlington police say the concern was about a note given to an employee several weeks ago, from someone not affiliated with the district.
Police they've now determined there is no threat to the schools.
"I'd rather be cautious than not cautious at all," says Blanchard.
The superintendent says the schools' front doors will be locked all week and then school is closed for vacation.
After that they'll consider going back to normal.
