MONTPELIER, Vt. -
If every school in Vermont wanted to install metal detectors and hire an officer to stand guard, they technically could. But voters would need to be on board with raising property taxes, in order to pay for the increased security measures.
The state doesn't require schools to spend a specific amount of money on security. Schools get x-amount of money from the state and then they decide how and where to divvy up the funds.
"These kinds of things shouldn't be pulled out quickly in the sudden aftermath of this situation; they have to be given the thoughtful consideration that's necessary," Steve Dale of the Vermont School Boards' Association said.
Again, there are no ear-marked or designated funds set aside for school safety. Each school makes its own determination. But in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, that could change if a new piece of legislation is introduced.
