Advice for Parents Dealing With the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Tough images to look at have been broadcasted across the country Friday.

Children running from school, people crying, all things that could be difficult for a child to comprehend.

"If you're a parent and you're seeing everything that's happening and you have a small child, what would you tell a parent?" said FOX44/ABC22.

"Yeah, well this is a discussion that's probably going to repeat itself millions of times across the households," said University of Vermont Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics David Rettew

Rettew says talking to kids Friday night is important, although it may not be easy.

"I think showing emotion is perfectly appropriate but I also think you want to be able to be clear headed and be able to speak in a calm way that can be reassuring to your child," said Rettew.

Rettew says even though the shooting took place in an elementary school, kids of that age shouldn't be exposed to a lot of information.

"I don't see much good that can come for kids watching constant coverage of this and getting to every little detail," said Rettew.

And come Monday, when school resumes, Rettew say you can take extra steps to help your child, although he admits, most will be ready to return.

"Driving them to school instead of taking the bus, you know I think that, that can be helpful. My sense is that most kids are going to be ok and that they're resilient and they'll be able to get back to school pretty quickly," said Rettew.
