WINOOSKI, Vt. -
There are more than 900 types of beer on the shelves of the Winooski Beverage store, but it's a certain brand that caused quite the stir Wednesday.
"Probably hundreds of phone calls, all asking about this," said Winooski Beverage manager Evan Goldfried.
The frenzy continued south in Montpelier at the Hunger Mountain Co-op.
"People are calling from Texas, Colorado wanting us to hold it for them and they'll come and get it," said Hunger Mountain Co-op Beer Buyer Patrick Luce
What everyone is looking for is Westveleteren XII, also known as Westy XII.
It's made by Trappist monks in Belgium, who need money to help re-build their monastery.
That's why they decided to sell a limited supply of the $85 dollar beer in the US.
Only about 150 stores got the bottles, including two in Vermont.
If you waited until Thursday, you're out of luck.
"I believe we sold out in 4 or 5 hours. There was a line at the door first thing, it was like a concert," said Luce.
At Winooski Beverage they sold out beforehand by doing an online reservation system.
"Nothing to my memory compares to the Westy XII release," said Goldfried.
As for how it tastes
"It's a fantastic beer. It's amazing," said Luce.
"It's fabulous," said Goldfried.
Other beer lovers agree giving it the second best ranking on the web site beeradvocate.com.
And even if you can't find it in the stores, it's already on EBay, where it's going for more than $300 dollars Thursday.
That might be your only option because it doesn't seem to be coming back.
"It's just a one and done, we're sorry," said Luce.
For $85-dollars people didn't just get beer.
The gift set also included two souvenir glasses.
Between the two stores only 32 cases of the beer were sold.
