BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont Health Officials are holding a press conference to discuss the whooping cough epidemic in the state.

FOX44 and ABC22 reporter David Hodges reports that there have been 500 cases of the disease in 2012, including 23 infants.

Vermont Health Commissioner Harry Chen says there have been no deaths so far.

The Health Department will be offering free T-DAP vaccinations for the disease at their 12 locations across the state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19:

Officials are urging anyone 19 years or older to get the vaccine.

Chen says whooping cough is highly contagious and that's why we're seeing it spread through Vermont.

Last year, a total of 37 came down with the disease statewide.

Health experts say tips for avoiding whooping cough include getting vaccinated, washing hands, and coughing properly.
