Best High School Rivalry in the Northern USA in Vermont!

Posted: Updated:

What's the greatest high school football rivalry in the entire country?

One of Vermont's own made it to the final four.

USA Today asked readers to vote for the best in 4 regions.

Vermont is in the north region, which spans from Maine to West Virginia.

"Simply known as the game," Paul Wheeler, Athletic Director at Lyndon Institute, said.

"It really is an interesting dynamic," David McGinn, Athletic Director at St. Johnsbury Academy, said.

Two men on opposite sides of "the game", a football tilt that dates back to 1894. The teams have met 107 times and the Hilltoppers of St. J do have the edge, up 15 games.

But it's the energy of 2 schools, their students, faculty, and alumni just 8 miles apart that drives this rivalry.

"It carries a history with it that is not lost on any of the people in the communities," McGinn said.  "So it lives on and with great strength."

A rivalry that transcends football on a Saturday afternoon. The night before, a parade viewed by thousands complete with a Lyndon Viking ship.

"Our kids ride in that Viking ship and get shields and swords it's a big deal on that Friday night," Wheeler said.

More than 309,000 voted on USA Today for this rivalry, by far the biggest vote getter in the region.

Friday, you can vote online to make it the biggest rivalry in the whole country.

If they win, both schools will split a $10,000 prize.

"Amazing for the size communities we come from," Wheeler said.
