Essex County, NY Lawmakers Vote to Dip Into Reserve Funds Instead of Raising Taxes

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. -

In Essex County, N.Y. lawmakers decided to dip heavily into reserve funds instead of increasing taxes for next year's budget.

With a little over two weeks before deadline, Essex County lawmakers passed a 2013 budget Monday by a vote of 9 to 8.

The $95 million budget uses nearly $7 million from the reserve fund instead of making program cuts or raising taxes by a large amount.

That has some county leaders at odds.

"I feel confident in the amount of fund balance that we're using," Thomas Scozzafava, Essex County Supervisor, said. "I don't see us falling off a fiscal cliff."

By dipping into the reserve fund, County property taxes will go up slightly.

It's the second year lawmakers have elected to increase them after several years of not doing so previously.
