Tires, Time and Space: Driving Tips When It's Icy

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Tires are rolling about at the Tire Warehouse in South Burlington a little more often than usual right now.

"Snow tires verse all season tires it does make a big difference," Tire Warehouse employee Mike Emilo said.

"There's a big compound difference in the rubber. They are much softer than the off season so they grip a lot better."

People holding on to that last grasp of Fall are letting go and embracing Winter and all of the safety precautions that come with it.

"Try to plan ahead to leave a little bit earlier so you're not in such a rush to get to work," Burlington Police Officer Jamie Morris said.

"Make sure you're not following people so close and that you leave a little bit of stopping room."

And it can only help to get tires that are fit to deal with the coming cold conditions.

"We've had a lot of people coming in and getting snow tires. it's still early in the year so we'll have plenty more coming in," Emilo said.

It might take some time when you go in to get your tires changed but police say it can make the difference of being safe on the road.

"If you got your snow tires on great you're one step ahead of the game if not you're going to want to think about getting that done," Morris said.

Maybe you're an experienced snow season driver and have already taken all the steps but don't assume the person driving behind you has been as mindful.

"You can do so much for yourself by being safe driver, taking it slow but always be alert for other drivers out there who might not be as safe as you," Morris said.
