HIGHGATE, Vt. -
Some people in Highgate say they don't feel safe at home.
They're afraid of people firing guns at nearby backyard firing ranges.
Case Jaring and others say in the past few years it seems people are target shooting more often. And here homes are pretty close to each other.
"Well that somebody gets hurt. That's the main concern," says Jaring.
One neighbor says his home has already been struck by a bullet.
Neighbors say they think they found a solution. They want the town to pass a new law that would stop people from firing guns here.
At a Highgate selectboard meeting Thursday, concerned neighbors presented a plan to ban target shooting in areas where people live close together.
That idea was not well received by many in the audience. Opponents of the proposed rule say they're being safe.
But that did little to calm the fears of people who say they might be in the line of fire.
"I'm not telling them to stop hunting, you know, but that I would like to see is sighting your gun at a safe place," says Jaring.
The selectboard didn't decide anything Thursday.
That has left supporters of the ban with another option to get the proposed ordinance on the ballot and they say they've almost collected enough signatures to do that.
