Burlington City Councilors Vote Down Independent Police Study

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

An independent review of how Burlington police broke up a protest this summer will not happen.

In July, protestors outside the Hilton were hit with pepper pellets and other non-lethal weapons by police officers.

The incident was looked at by the Burlington Police Commission.

But some councilors wanted someone outside the city to review it.

That however was shot down last night by a vote of 9-4.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger supported the commission's findings.

"They don't see value in a further investigation and that's the recommendation that's been made to the council and I must say at this point I agree with that recommendation," said Weinberger.

Although the commission felt no independent review was necessary, in its report they determined a more thorough review was necessary of policies regarding city protestors.
