BURLINGTON, Vt. -
We are learning more about Israel Keyes and his confessed killing spree across the country.
Keyes was born 34-years-ago and died Sunday in a jail in Alaska. In between, he served in the army, ran a contracting business, and admitted to killing at least eight people.
Besides that prosecutors aren't saying too much about Keyes.
"Keyes is an individual from Alaska, a private contractor," says Tris Coffin, U.S. Attorney for Vermont.
In 1997, Keyes bought a home and land in Constable, New York for $15,000. The county says Keyes still owns it.
Soon after, the military says he joined the Army and was stationed at Ft. Lewis near Tacoma, Washington. Keyes served from 1998 to 2001 as indirect fire infantryman.
After that he worked in Washington State then moved to Alaska.
Somewhere in that time, according to the Anchorage Daily News, a decade of murders began.
"There are other victims who he has identified and investigations as to those victims will be ongoing," says Coffin.
In Alaska, Keyes was facing a March trial for the murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, who was abducted from an Anchorage coffee kiosk.
Prosecutors say Keyes was also linked to four deaths in Washington State, one in New York State, and the Curriers in Vermont.
"He liked to do it. Why somebody acts like that, nobody knows," says Coffin.
Prosecutors say they're still piecing together the life of Keyes and other murders he might have committed.
So far he has not been connected to any other deaths in Vermont.
