COLCHESTER, Vt. -
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders says he blames high gas prices in the Burlington area on greedy fuel dealers.
Sanders says he's soon going to call the major dealers to get answers.
Stop at a Burlington area gas station to fill up and you'll pay big.
"I know it's been high around here," says David Morway.
Sanders say the prices are a lot higher than other parts of Vermont, up to a quarter a gallon more.
On Wednesday, we decided to see if gas prices in Vermont really varied that much.
In Colchester, the price was $3.65. In Montpelier, we found the price was a nickel less.
After nearly two-hours of driving and checking online gas trackers, we found some of the cheapest gas in Vermont in Springfield.
At one station, people filled up for $3.42 a gallon.
From Springfield we headed west and found even cheaper gas: $3.39 a gallon in Ludlow.
As we headed north, prices were more expensive from Rutland to Middlebury, though still not close to Burlington prices.
Some people think that can be solved by Costco. That's because Costco wants to add a gas station and it says that could affect pumps across the Burlington area.
"I don't think they'd be bringing it in here if they didn't think they could lower the price," says Morway.
Right now Costco's gas plan is tied up in the review process. The District Environmental Commission hopes to issue a decision by the end of the year.
