New York police say two New Mexico men were arrested after being apprehended while traveling to Vermont in a murder for hire plot involving a man serving a life sentence for the 2000 killing of a 15-year-old girl in Barre, Vt.
New York State Police said Monday that 41-year-old Mark Staake was arrested by federal agents on Nov. 19 at the Highgate Springs border crossing in Vermont. The next day, Staake's nephew 23-year-old Tanner Ruane was arrested at a gas station in the Albany, N.Y., area.
Police say there were multiple targets in the St. Albans, Vt., area. They did not name them.
While in prison in New Mexico, Staake befriended Dana Martin, who was convicted in Vermont of killing Deandra Fluorucci. Police say Martin may be linked to disappearances around the country.
